Chainsaw Man is a manga series written and drawn by Tatsuki Fujimoto. The manga is published in Japan by Shueisha and it has enjoyed tremendous popularity and success. The series is known for its dark tone, edgy action scenes, and thematic depth. The story revolves around Denji, a young man with an extremely difficult life, reduced to working as a demon hunter to pay off his late father’s debts. Denji has a demon companion named Pochita who can transform into a chainsaw, hence the manga title “Chainsaw Man”. After a series of life-threatening events, Denji merges with Pochita and becomes Chainsaw Man, a human-demon hybrid entity with incredibly powerful chainsaw abilities. Chainsaw Man is a mythical figure in the manga world, and his powers and appearance evolve over the series. Denji/Chainsaw Man is a complex character. On the one hand, he longs for a normal life and dreams of having enough to eat, having a roof over his head and falling in love. On the other hand, he is confronted with the brutal reality of his existence as a demon hunter and must deal with the emotional and physical consequences of his transformation into Chainsaw Man. Chainsaw Man’s design is also fascinating, with a head and arms that can transform into chainsaws. It’s raw, wild, and it’s a true embodiment of horror and chaos. Much like the character Frankenstein in classic literature, or the Hulk in American comics, Chainsaw Man is both a monster and a character to befriend, creating a unique narrative dynamic. It is also interesting to compare the progression of Denji with that of characters such as Walter White in Breaking Bad, where the evolution of the main character is constantly in balance between morality, humanity and the dark and violent side of their new reality.
