Hibino Kafka is a thirty-year-old who has always dreamed of joining Japans anti-kaiju defense forces alongside his childhood friend, Commander Mina Ashiro. After failing on his first attempt, Hibino Kafka gives up on his dream and watches the defense forces from a distance, cleaning up after the exterminated kaiju.

This leads to being belittled by Reno Ichikawa. But just as Kafka gathers the courage to try again for the defense forces, a kaiju decides to take residence in his body.

Things then become complicated for Hibino Kafka, who officially becomes a defense force member in the third unit and also Kaiju No. 8, sought for extermination.
