Godzilla is an American film directed by Roland Emmerich and released in 1998. It is the 23rd film featuring the kaij Godzilla from the Japanese studio Th. It is the first American film starring Godzilla.
Upon release, the film received mostly negative reviews from critics. However, it grossed 379 million dollars at the worldwide box office, with a production budget estimated between 130 and 150 million plus 80 million in marketing costs. Despite profits, it was considered a commercial failure, putting planned sequels into question. Instead, the film received a television sequel in the form of the animated series Godzilla: The Series, aired from 1998 to 2000.
