Ken Kaneki, once a mere human, he was studying Japanese Literature as a 1st year student at Kamii University, thus living a relatively normal life.
However, things change quickly after Dr. Akihiro Kano transplants Lize Kamishiro’s RC Cells into him, turning him into an Artificial Ghoul.
He later joins the Antique, a cafe known to the Ghouls as a meeting place, as a part-time server. Thanks to the members of the Antique, Ken tries to learn how to live like the Ghouls do and eventually adopts the nickname Eye Patch.
