L Lawliet, is a world-renowned detective who takes on the challenge of catching the serial killer known as Kira. In his investigation, L highly suspects Light Yagami and his goal is to prove that Light is Kira. He is also endowed with extraordinary intelligence and uses his intellectual abilities anonymously in the service of the police. Despite his sleepy and weary appearance, L is very lively and active. A junior tennis champion in England by his own account, he proves himself in his match against Light to be extremely talented. He also manages to defend himself in hand-to-hand combat, and even answers Light with a powerful kick. He often stands in a strange way, in attitudes suggesting a certain flexibility. His intelligence, however, remains his main asset.
