Jonathan Joestar is the protagonist of Phantom Blood and the first JoJo in the series.

Born the only son of wealthy businessman George Joestar I, Jonathan is an honest, kind and positive man whose life is full of tragedy after meeting his adopted older brother and series antagonist Dio Brando. In his fight against Dio, Jonathan becomes a Wave user under the tutelage of master William Antonio Zeppeli.

The Wave was taught to him by William Antonio Zeppeli, when the young man seemed desperate. His encounter with this energy allowed him to quickly heal his wounds after his fight with Dio at the Joestar mansion and brought him success in several confrontations.

Before he died, William donated all of his wave energy to his student, who then began to develop greater power.
